July at OSC marks the start of our new fiscal year, which means it’s time for our annual membership drive. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we can only operate by the generosity of our supporters. So just like your favorite public radio station, once a year we invite you to become a supporting member of OSC…
Back to full in-person gatherings Sunday, June 20
Hello OSC friends and family, I hope you are finding meaningful and inspiring ways to remember Juneteenth today! My big news today is that, in accordance with the State of California’s new guidelines announced on June 15th, we are hosting our first full in-person church gathering tomorrow, June 20th at 11 AM. Here’s what’s new for tomorrow:
Pride, new staff roles & getting back to a unified Sunday gathering
Believe it or not, summer is just around the corner, the pandemic appears to be winding-down, and there are lots of new things happening at The Oceanside Sanctuary. We are inching our way closer to a normal Sunday Gathering by combining our two gatherings into one unified 11 AM worship service beginning THIS Sunday, June 6th
Our plan for returning to in-person Sunday gatherings
As many of you know, our staff and Board have been working for the past several weeks on developing our plan for returning to in-person worship services. Many of you recently participated in our congregational survey to help us gauge how ready we are to begin moving toward re-opening. You can click here to see the results of that survey. Today I want to share our plans with you.
We Need You To Help Discern Our Next Mission!
Some of you may remember that in November of 2017 our congregation approved a 3-year “Mission Commitment” to help guide our church through a set of values, vision, mission, and priority statements. That Mission Commitment expires December 31, 2020. Therefore, this fall, we will embark on “Mission 2023”, the process to renew our Mission for another 3 years…
Unprecedented
Twenty-three centuries ago a Jewish philosopher who some translators call The Preacher wrote those words in what eventually became the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. They seem especially appropriate today.
“Nothing new” stands in sharp contrast to another word we hear often these days: unprecedented. As in, the Pandemic is unprecedented. The Black Lives Matter protests are unprecedented. America’s recent, historic, 33% drop in GDP is unprecedented. Precedent literally means, go before. So, the point, of course, is nothing like this has happened before.
How Long, O Lord?

Support A More Just And Generous Christianity Today
As you may know, every fall and spring we conduct a fund drive to keep our church going. So from now until June 14th, we are inviting you to becoming a Supporting Member of OSC. Supporting Members are those who commit to give regularly to support our mission. Why does this matter? Let me answer by telling you about just a few of our newest friends who have joined OSC this year.
The Spirituality of Resilience
I received two bits of news this week that stood in sharp contrast with one another, and yet, both pointed toward a similar theme. First, I heard from two families in our congregation whose jobs have been either eliminated or dramatically cut back. I listened to the anxiety in their voices as they spoke of the uncertainty their families face in the months ahead. The prospect of losing their homes is real. Yet…
